Fall Fun 11/01/2011
Well it has been a busy couple months. We have been doing lots of biking and Beth has been working hard. Andy continues to thrive and is turning into quite the little helper... at least when he wants to be. He loves to empty drawers and shelves only to pile everything right back where it came from a moment later. Enjoy the pics and hope all is well. Add Comment Happy Birthday Andy 07/09/2011
Finally the cake pictures I promised. Summer has finally arrived and while Andy is slowly settling into the daycare routine we fit in another long weekend at the cabin. This time with lots of friends and playmates visiting. We even fit in some mountain biking with enough mechanical issues for a season. Whats a couple hour ride without an hour of mechanical work. Either way it was great to get to ride together for a change since we usually have to split up so that the other one of us can entertain Andy. Andy is turning into a real character, despite being a bit grumpy over daycare illness and a slew of new molars, he loves playing on reactions. He thinks it is hilarious and loves to do anything that he isn't supposed to do. This results in a high speed chase for a giggling little man who wants nothing more than to be caught. Easter Trips 04/26/2011
Well Easter is upon us again and for the second year in a row we met up with the Junkers at a water park. This time it was in Fargo and with the whole state sinking under flood water this time golf was out of the question. The swimming was fun for us and the car and the company great. Of coarse the weather was with us as always and we drove both directions in snow storms and the news reports were full of reports of drivers sliding off icy roads only to be rescued from the flood water later by the local dive team. Only in ND. Upon returning to Minot the weather took a turn for the better this last weekend and we decided it was time to shake some of the rust off the mountain bikes. The weather was great and the views of the still frozen Lake Sakakawea from the Indian Hills trail were amazing, however the ride was short because all the north facing sections of trail were still under drifts of snow and It was a it much to pull the Burley through. Andy is loving all the trips to the park and is choosing walk more and more. He now routinely catches his balance, crawls up stairs, and climbs into and on-top of everything. The fun continues. This week we had lots of fun. On top of the normal biking and running during the week we decided to go exploring over the weekend. This took us north to the Turtle "Mountains" of North Dakota.... Don't want to hurt anyones feelings, the area was beautiful but we didn't see any mountains. Just a couple hundred foot high plateau with lots of short trees on it. First we stopped at the Strawberry lake camping area... which was in fact a very nice campground although even in the mountains of ND the watter appears to be rising. As a result many of the picnic tables, a few lights, and at least one outhouse are currently submerged or near so. Next we continued across to Lake Metigoshe State Park for some hiking. Interesting the park had its beginnings as a transient camp for the civilian conservation corps and was littered with abandoned buildings. On our four or so mile hike we must have passed at least half a dozen abandoned outhouses as well as several larger buildings and a huge abandoned lodge. The map also left a bit to be desired and the first trail we took began as a mowed road with variety but suddenly turned to single track. I followed this path around a group of bushes with a short chunk of fence tangled up in them and headed up the trail toward what I thought was a pioneer grave marker. On closer look it was very nice chrome colored and said United States on the close side... so I walked to the other side... and it said Canada, causing me to jump back to my side since we certainly were not carrying passports. Oops... So we turned around and found some different trails to explore. On the way home we stopped to see several of the great turtles the guard the mountains... ND has lots of big things spread around and this area is no exception. The first is a huge turtle made of welded together car wheels, and the second is a very tall turtle ridding a snow mobile... Go figure..So not a bad weekend and I think Andy had lots of fun. Let me know how you like the new slide show thing, or I can go back to the old layout. Biking 09/19/2010
Andy's love for hiking seems to be holding, so we have been able to fit hikes in almost every night after Beth finishes up at the hospital. Even at home I spend most of my days with him in the back yard where he is much more content. Saturday we even worked out a logistical puzzle and managed find a way for both of us to ride the Wasatch Crest Trail... The trail is wonderful and I wish I could ride it daily. Josh, John and myself rode it before lunch and then I returned to take care of Andy while Josh went back up with Beth and Amanda for a second trip. The views are great with the trees beginning to take on fall colors in earnest. We are down to the final week in Salk Lake and will surly miss it. Withdrawals seem inevitable but it has been great and we will fit as much into the next week as we can. Here are a few pictures from one hike and Beths ride. I'm not complaining but John pushed such a great pace on our earlier ride that I was too busy keeping him in sight to think about taking any pictures. It is a wonderful thing to feel completely exhausted, a feeling we found it hard to obtain in the flat world. Maah Daah Hey In A Day 06/13/2010
Well I think my adventures are temporarily on hold but here is a well crafted movie of the Maah Daah Hay adventure we all need on our biking lists. Maah Daah Hey in a Day from Chad Ziemendorf on Vimeo. Snowflakes & Sprockets Mtn Bike Race 03/03/2010
Well I just got a hold of some good pictures from the downhill mountain bike race I won the past weekend at Huff Hills Ski Area. It was a great event and tons of fun. Sketchy as anything I have ever done but sketchy is fun right? As long as you kept the speed up and didn't turn you were fine... but we know how that goes, just about everyone rag dolled at least once and I nearly tumbled into the spectators on at least two occasions. The sections right before and right after the jumps were especially rutted so if you made it into the air straight you were half way there. Anyway I got lucky and managed to link recoveries to get a clean first run. The second one didn't go as well, unless I was being graded as a gymnast but the first run time held and I took hold the 1st place solid gold painted assortment of welded together bike parts. It must have looked good because Beth (my personal an call ski patroller) asked if I was hurt when I made it to the finish. This is what makes life so fun. Great people and great event. Can't wait to teach the little guy the ropes... just kidding Beth. North Dakota Mountain Bike Guide 12/14/2009
I know most of you do not find yourselves in the Dakotas looking for mountain biking trails very often, but if you do check you my new trail guide site. I put together a guide of all the trails we have discovered around the area with some very idiot proof web tools I have discovered. Thanks, Google! Thanks, Weebly. Check it out and see what you think. Not to bad for a non-computer engineer. Maah-Daah-Hey Trail 09/20/2009
Well as usual I am always playing catch up, Beth and I spent two weekends during the past month getting a taste of what the near by Maah-Daah-Hey Trail in the Badlands has to offer. The conclusion is MUCH!!! W have certainly found the most technical and beautiful trail in North Dakota. And even by Montana standards the trails length which now entails around 125 miles of continuous single track makes riding it end to end a noble feat. Although I am not sure when we do plan on trying to fit this in so let us know when you are available and join us. It is a can't miss event, great riding, beautiful views, and great camping. Oh and believe it or not there are trees and hills that will make you sweat. Don't believe me, check out our pictures or watch the slide show. Cheers!! Indian Hills Biking 09/08/2009
![]() To get August going and begin to explore the expanded areas surrounding Bismarck we headed to Indian Hills on the north shore of lake to ride the Nux Baa Ga Trail. We found a wide dirt trail with great views as it skirted the enormous lakes shoreline. Although the trail was not particularly technical it was nice to see a new part of the state. | Mike, Beth, Andy, Roo & MaxTraveling gypsies with skis...
