Halloween Fun 11/03/2010
Well we had a great Holloween, although there is always a catch right? This time it was finding out that one of our gypsy wagons was a month past due, as the nice officer at the air force base politely made us aware before telling us to turn out disorganized hides around. Probably not the best idea while living on the road? I guess the layers of mail forwarding finally got us on something that counted. Regardless Bill and Jennifer drove out to the gate and picked us up, so Andy still made it to the party, and enjoyed his costume. We even went to the mall afterward but he seemed a bit overwhelmed by all the strange looking strangers. Recovering in style however, when we got home he decided that we didn't need to spoon feed him anymore. He could do it himself! Not sure what rice cereal does to eyes and nasal passages but he didn't seem to mind the mess. Next week it is back on the road, and we can't wait to get back west. 2 Comments Fall in the Dakotas 11/01/2010
Well we have been having a great fall here. Until last weekend when winter hit us with a snowy 65mph blast we havdn't seen a drop of rain and the abnormally high temperatures and continuous sunshine made playing outside easy. Andy and I have continued to spend two to four hours a day outside walking, running, and watching wildlife around our favorite park. We have been using Andy's stroller as a grocery getter. Beth even managed to get a couple good mountain bike rides in with us during her last week of surgery. However the Saturday before last she dove into following hospitalists on her internal medicine rotation and the biking has been cut short by her long call hours and the snow on the ground. On the plus side since we live a skyway away from the hospital she has been able to come spend time with us between admits. Andy even took a little time out of his busy day to send a little message to one of his great grandfathers who we all hope feels much better soon. This last weekend we took a little trip south to Bismarck for Beth's ski patrol refresher. This gave Andy the opportunity to spend his first night in his new tent at the hotel. It worked very well and I highly recommend them. Then while Beth was refreshing we summited the snowy "peak" above Huff Hills Ski Area for some nice views. Andy loves to explore. It's been a big couple weeks for him. He seems to have taken being 5% by weight very seriously and suddenly doubled his milk intake the beginning of last week. In addition he has now mastered front to back rolling, and is getting much more comfortable on his stomach with his head up as well as seems to be slowly warming up to spoon feeding. He really likes the high chair, that we finally had a chance to pull out of the storage in Bismarck last weekend. That's a funny story in itself, but by the time we were done we had managed to rescue the snow tires for both cars from the bowels of the pile, change them out in the mud, dug our way into the keys for the fire safe we have been carrying around with no way to open, as well as retrieve ski gear. So now we have passports (in safe) and equipment for our x-mas ski trip. This week we had lots of fun. On top of the normal biking and running during the week we decided to go exploring over the weekend. This took us north to the Turtle "Mountains" of North Dakota.... Don't want to hurt anyones feelings, the area was beautiful but we didn't see any mountains. Just a couple hundred foot high plateau with lots of short trees on it. First we stopped at the Strawberry lake camping area... which was in fact a very nice campground although even in the mountains of ND the watter appears to be rising. As a result many of the picnic tables, a few lights, and at least one outhouse are currently submerged or near so. Next we continued across to Lake Metigoshe State Park for some hiking. Interesting the park had its beginnings as a transient camp for the civilian conservation corps and was littered with abandoned buildings. On our four or so mile hike we must have passed at least half a dozen abandoned outhouses as well as several larger buildings and a huge abandoned lodge. The map also left a bit to be desired and the first trail we took began as a mowed road with variety but suddenly turned to single track. I followed this path around a group of bushes with a short chunk of fence tangled up in them and headed up the trail toward what I thought was a pioneer grave marker. On closer look it was very nice chrome colored and said United States on the close side... so I walked to the other side... and it said Canada, causing me to jump back to my side since we certainly were not carrying passports. Oops... So we turned around and found some different trails to explore. On the way home we stopped to see several of the great turtles the guard the mountains... ND has lots of big things spread around and this area is no exception. The first is a huge turtle made of welded together car wheels, and the second is a very tall turtle ridding a snow mobile... Go figure..So not a bad weekend and I think Andy had lots of fun. Let me know how you like the new slide show thing, or I can go back to the old layout. Salt Lake City Adventure Begins 09/08/2010
Well the trip to Salt Lake City went well for the most part. Andy wasn't a huge fan of sitting alone in the back of the car for a dozen hours a day, but Beth weathered the crying and Andy seems to have recovered. He is still as needy as always although with constant attention and love he lives a good life and provides plenty of smiles and sounds. He loves being in the mountains and has taken to our evening hikes as long as they are not too long. He insists that he is facing forward in the snuggly even though he is barely tall enough to see out and bobble heads merrily in awe as everything goes by. Beth's schedule here has bee much more manageable and we have even gotten in some mtn biking and climbing. My climbing arms proved better than expected although when they died the were worthless and the low elevation flatlands living seems to have thinned my blood a bit for biking as well, although the suffering feels great. Thanks go out to Josh and Amanda (who has been so busy on call we barely see her) for the wonderful hospitality. The Johnson's Visit Minneapolis 08/26/2010
Well a lot has happened in the past couple weeks. Beth is now nearly done with here rotation here in Minneapolis, I "Retired" last Friday, and it was all made possible by the Johnson family. Noreen spent two weeks helping take of Andy, Pat joined us for most of a week, Susie is here this week, we meet up with Luke and Erica for dinner, and Jon & Katie continue to support us with room and board. We are looking forward to Salt Lake City but will miss all the Family support and the wonderful home we were welcomed into here. Andy is growing well. He was up to 10lbs 6oz yesterday and is full of smiles. Enjoy the photos. Tomorrow we pack the wagon back up and head to SLC. We will let you know how the trip goes. Five Weeks Old And Counting 07/25/2010
Well again I have to apologize for the delayed post. In the last couple weeks we have officially rolled the gypsy wagon down the road to Minneapolis and thanks goes to the Junker family for a place to park. :) Last weekend we traveled to Chicago for Beth's Step 2 practical test and with my commute from Grafton put another 2000 miles on the FIT. We will let you you know how the test went in October when the scores come out. This brings us to the main topic. Andy is doing great. He is sleeping much better (partially due to our new swing) and spends many more hours awake and happy. The last trip has allowed our little world traveler to keep his stats top notch and he can still claim to have been to as many states as weeks he is old. North Dakota.. Check, Montana... Check, Minnesota... Check, Wisconsin... Check, Illinois... Check. Little Andy is starting to wonder if his car seat is part of him. On the brighter side home is in the same place for 6 weeks now, and cousin Audrey is doing everything she can to help take care of baby "aaaeee" and we got to see the Van Alstine family in Rochester. Audrey and Mackenzie had great time running around the house spreading toys to all and everyone else had a great dinner and even better company. So this week I am heading back to Grafton and Beth is taking the multiple choice portion of her Step 2 exam. Another week another adventure. Hope we find everyone in good health and spirits. Enjoy the photos. Well I am sure you have all wondered what would fit in a FIT. While our experiment is ongoing, it is a truly a lot. Say.... Two adults, One occupied car seat, Two 70lb golden retrievers, and enough gear for all above enjoy a week long adventure back to Montana. Yep... It fits although as a caveat we are not accepting any gifts over the size of a 12oz soda can during this leg of the trip. We offer our thanks to Pat and Noreen for all their help and guidance during the take off phase. Noreen did a wonderful job keeping Beth's head above water with child care assistance and emotional support while I returned to work last week. Pat arrived by Amtrak just in time Friday night to help me put all our earthly belongings that would not fit into our two cars into a big shipping container at the local mini-storage. So yes, officially homeless now. The Fit which already had a big week and now looks like a large blue golf ball due to the most horrific hail storm I have even seen last Wednesday, came with us and the Subaru was stuffed full and abandoned on a side street until we return in a week to hopefully find it safe and sound. So we have now traveled West stopping in Billings, Bozeman, and Helena. Tomorrow its on to Missoula to see the Rau grandparents and Audrey. Then Monday its back to Bismarck for a pediatric appointment, then on to Grafton for work, and finally to Minneapolis the following Friday where we will stay for a few days. As promised here are a few more pictures of our little man. Andy is doing very well, doing what babies do....eat....pee....sleep....poop. All that cell splitting must be exhausting. Well keep you posted as our little adventure unfolds. Well here we are. Just completed the second day and Beth hasn't given up on me yet.... Or at least I don't think she has. It was a good day. With the help of some stout pain meds Beth regained the ability to walk upright like a human and after a few cases of excessive sleeping at the brestaurant Andy has regained his feeding enthusiasm. To cap off the day they approved our discharge papers and we got to go home... So there went my excuse for not making any progress on the move. So here are a few more pictures as well as a few showing Andy's wonderful haircut. Two days in and he is already more stylish than his father. I apologize for the delay in the posting of these sought after pics but between the honey-do list and the packing it is getting harder to find time to waste on the computer... can't wait to get back to work for some rest! Just kidding Beth. You can also find the local hospital announcement for the birth HERE. Andrew Patrick Rau 06/18/2010
Well our family was blessed with a wonderful son. Here are the first pictures of the little guy. It was a tough day but everything turned out well and Beth and Andy are resting and doing well. We should head home tomorrow and are looking forward to it. Except for the fact that we will be getting right back to the grind of packing so that we can be out of our house by the end of the month and officially homeless. Thank goodness for friends! Anyway here are the stats. Name: Andrew Patrick Rau DOB: 6/17/2010 @ 9:27pm Central Time Weight @ Birth: 6lb 15 oz Baby Shower 05/29/2010
Last weekend was the baby shower. We are forever greatful to all of the friends and family that insist there is still hope for us and helped us prepare for the next chapter. Kristin and Tamara, two of Beth's fellow classmates did an amazing job and the shower was reported to be a blast. It was a wonderful weekend including swimming, lots of time with our niece Audrey, and an off road adventure in the torn up street in front of the house. Thanks there goes to Jon for the generous use of his freshly washed vehicle for the fun. We have no clue where any of that mud came from.... |
